Job Summary: The Hisotechnologist, Sr. processes surgical specimens for pathologic diagnosis, including tissue fixation, processing, microtomy, and
staining slides for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Performs related special staining techniques, which may include immunohistochemical, immunoflourescent, and enzymehistochemical stains. Documents all quality control and preventive maintenance

Responsibilities

Essential Functions
• Maintains active participation with the pathology group and corporate functions by assisting with:
o Developing and revising policies and processes, including quality control and maintenance.
o Evaluating and maintaining instruments.
o Defining competency requirements.
o Training and evaluating new hires and/or students.
o Collaborating with the Quality Specialist on developing and implementing process improvement plans.
o Ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Troubleshoots processing and staining processes and instruments.
• Places engineering and biomed service requests as needed.
• Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply.
• Receives and processes specimens, answers the telephone, and greets guests to the department.
• Reports all abnormal findings to the supervisor, manager, and/or Pathologist, and documents discrepancies and their
resolutions.
• Assumes three or more of the following responsibilities: key operator duties, projects, teaching, tech in charge, and evaluation
of new technology.
• Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the department workflow
• Serves as resource to other team members in the department
• Addresses customer concerns and follows up in a timely manner
• Oversees daily activities associated with histology laboratory functions.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state
and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.


Other Related Functions
• Maintains an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program, including performance and evaluation of key quality
indicators.
• Follows established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
• Practices infection control and safety policies.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital, and departmental matters at all times.
• Cross-trained to perform duties on other benches, such as slide distribution and filing.

Qualifications

Education/Training
• A bachelor’s degree is required. An associates degree and two (2) years of directly related Histotechnology experience (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section) may substitute for the bachelor’s degree.
• Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology is required.

 

Licensure/Certification
• Maintains a current Florida license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (Qualification: Histology Technologist).
• Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL), or eligible for either certification through a professional laboratory
agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

 

Experience
Three (3) years of laboratory experience is required
